This method is known as horizontal directional drilling (HDD). While digging open trenches for utilities, removing large obstacles, and surveying the land are all important tasks in construction and utility installation, they don't capture the primary function of directional boring machines, which is specifically to facilitate subsurface installations without the need for an open trench.
